Games like Basketball GM, and what each one does differently

Basketball GM is free, deep and has been running since 2008. If you want an installed phone app, a court you can watch, or real managers to play against, here is what else is out there.

Bar chart comparing several basketball management games

Basketball GM has a strong claim to being the game that defined the genre on the web. By its own account it has been running since 2008, it is free, and it still has a devoted following. So when people search for games like it, they are rarely unhappy with it. They usually want one specific thing it was not built to be.

This guide covers what Basketball GM does well, the common reasons people look elsewhere, and five alternatives, each described using what the game says about itself, with a link so you can check.

Full disclosure. We make Backcourt, one of the games below. Every claim about the others comes from their own site or store listing, and we say plainly where Basketball GM does something better than we do.

What Basketball GM does well

Basketball GM describes itself as a free online single-player basketball management simulation. From its own site:

  • It is 100% free, with no virtual currency, no microtransactions and no pay-to-win.
  • It is unlimited: as many leagues and as many seasons as you want.
  • It has real rosters for any season in history, so a league can start in any year you like.
  • Games show play-by-play live box scores.
  • It runs in a web browser, so there is nothing to install.

Historical rosters and unlimited leagues are genuine strengths. Backcourt offers neither, so if those are what you love, be clear about what you would be trading.

Why people look for something else

The common reasons are practical, and none of them are criticisms of Basketball GM:

  • An installed app. Something on the home screen that keeps its saves on the device and plays on a flight.
  • A match you can watch. A court with players moving, rather than a feed and a box score.
  • Other people. Rankings, leagues or head-to-head games against real managers.
  • A phone-first interface. Screens designed around a thumb rather than a mouse.

Backcourt

Where it differs from Basketball GM: you watch the match. Possessions play out on a live court with a commentary feed stamped with the quarter and clock, at 1× to 8×, and the game pauses for coach moments — an opponent run, foul trouble, fatigue, crunch time — so you make the call in the moment.

  • Native apps on iPhone, iPad, Mac, Android and Huawei, plus a browser version that installs as a web app.
  • Career mode runs on the device and works offline, with three career slots.
  • Ranked 1v1 against real managers, with Elo-based Rank Points across six ranks.
  • 364 players whose position, age and salary come from real 2025-26 data, with roles graded by the game.
  • Free. Advertising is the only income, and nothing purchasable changes squad strength or results.

Where Basketball GM is better: real rosters for any season in history, and unlimited leagues. Backcourt has the current player pool and three career slots. Browse every Backcourt player rating to see what that pool looks like.

Ultimate Pro Basketball GM

A basketball management sim from Games2rk for iOS, Mac and Android. Its App Store listing highlights offline GM simulation, signing, trading and drafting, training rookies and hiring coaches, managing finances, sponsors and ticket prices, upgrading the arena, gym and medical facilities, handling player demands and morale, and online ranked and multiplayer leagues.

It is free to download with in-app purchases, which its listing shows include a premium upgrade, training point packs and boosts. That is worth reading before a long career if you care about how progress is paid for.

Astonishing Basketball Manager

From Studio Zero, for iOS and Android. Its App Store listing promises that you can play offline or online with no ads, and highlights deep scouting, complex trades, a franchise-player career mode, a college cup, a story mode called The Prodigy, online multiplayer with daily and weekly events, and community-created rosters and draft classes. In-app purchases listed include training points, legendary players and extra content.

BuzzerBeater

If what you are missing is other people, this is the most direct answer. BuzzerBeater describes itself as an online basketball simulation game that pits you against other managers across the planet, and it is free. It runs in the browser, with apps for iOS and Android. Because the competition is live, it is not an offline game.

Pro Basketball Manager 2026

The pick if what you want is more scale rather than a phone. From Umix Studios for Windows and macOS, released on 17 November 2025, its Steam page lists more than 2,000 teams across 90 domestic leagues, the Basketball Champions League with 53 licensed teams, and 3D match presentation. It is a paid game.
