Energy, fatigue and injuries: the season-long cost of minutes
Energy is a real number doing real damage. Here are the thresholds that matter, how fatigue shows up in a match, and how to build a squad still standing in the Play-In.
Every player card in Backcourt carries an ENR value between 0 and 100, with a small coloured bar next to it. It is the easiest number on the squad screen to ignore, because unlike minutes or ratings it does not appear to do anything when you look at it.
It is doing a great deal.
The thresholds that matter

The important part is that these effects are gradual rather than a cliff. A player at 68 is not broken — he is slightly worse in ways you will not notice in any individual game, and meaningfully worse across twenty of them. That is what makes energy so easy to neglect: nothing dramatic happens on the night you should have acted.
How fatigue shows up in a match
Fatigue is not an abstract modifier — it is visible in the commentary feed if you are watching for it.
- Mid-range misses accumulating in the third and fourth quarters from a player who was fine in the first half. This is the signature pattern.
- Defensive rebounds going the other way late in games, as your bigs stop getting to position.
- Late fouls from a player arriving a beat behind the play.
If you find yourself losing fourth quarters repeatedly, the answer is far more often the ENR column than a tactical adjustment.
Fatigue compounds across fixtures
Energy recovers between matches, but it does not necessarily return to 100 after a heavy night. This is the mechanic that catches managers out, because no single game looks like the problem.
A player at 34 minutes a night might recover to 92, then 88, then 84, then 79 across four fixtures — each recovery slightly incomplete. Nothing in any individual week looks alarming. By the halfway mark he is living in the low seventies, and by the trade deadline he is in the fifties and one awkward landing away from a fortnight out.
The three-week audit. Every three or four weeks, open the squad screen and read only the ENR column. Anyone under 70 gets their minutes trimmed in the next fixture. It takes fifteen seconds and it is the single highest-value routine in the game.
Injuries: a countdown, and no way around it
When a player goes down, his card shows a countdown in days. He cannot be selected until it clears. There is no heal button, nothing to purchase, and no way to hurry it along.
That is a deliberate design choice, and it makes squad depth the only real mitigation available. Injury risk rises with minutes played and rises further at low energy, so the two things that protect you are the same two things: rotate more players, and keep everyone above 70.
A returning player is available, not restored
When the countdown clears, the player is selectable again — that is all it means. He comes back with the energy he had when he went down, which is rarely much. Throwing him straight into 34 minutes is how a two-week absence turns into a six-week one. Give him two or three lighter fixtures and let the medical facility do its work.
Building a squad that survives
Everything above points at the same conclusion, which is the argument made at greater length in the rotation guide:
- Fill the roster to fifteen. You cannot rest players you do not have.
- Rotate nine or ten. Eight is fine until it is not; eleven dilutes form.
- Cap your stars around 34 minutes in ordinary fixtures — 32 in the Online League, where you cannot pick your moments.
- Pull starters in decided games. Up 22 with six minutes left is free energy; take it.
- Audit the ENR column every three weeks and act before the injury, not after.
The counterintuitive part
Resting a good player costs you a small amount in the game you rest him. It is genuinely a cost, not a free action, and that is why so many managers never do it — every individual instance looks like a bad trade.
The trade is not for that game. It is for the Play-In, when the club that managed its minutes has a fit rotation and the club that did not is starting a 79-rated backup in the Play-In. Across a 45-week calendar, that is not a close comparison.

At what energy level should I rest a player?
Below 70 you should be cutting his minutes in the next fixture. Below 50 he is actively hurting your results and is at meaningfully higher injury risk.
Can I heal an injured player faster?
No. An injury carries a countdown in days and there is nothing to buy or tap that shortens it. Depth is the only mitigation.
Does energy recover fully between matches?
It recovers between fixtures, but not instantly to 100 after a heavy night. Consecutive heavy games compound, which is how players end up in the fifties without any single game looking excessive.
Does resting a player hurt his form?
A player in the rotation who gets a lighter night is fine. Dropping someone out of the rotation entirely for a long stretch is what costs form, which is why nine or ten players is better than rotating fifteen.
